A neighbor of the convicted rapist in Cleveland who was arrested Saturday night after six decomposed bodies were found in his house said Monday that the police were notified repeatedly about violence there, but little was done.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Judy Martin, who lives in a Cleveland suburb and is the director of Survivors/Victims of Tragedy, said the other question raised is whether missing person reports, and especially those involving people of color or people who live in poor neighborhoods, are taken seriously enough by the police.

“We have a lot of women of color who disappeared and who police just never even bothered to look for,” Ms. Martin said. Meanwhile, the police, who have yet to file charges against Mr. Sowell relating to the six bodies, tried to gather evidence.

“It’s not clear what the answer is,” said Kristen Anderson, who oversees the sex offender tracking team at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

I think the answer could become clearer to Ms. Anderson if she spoke to police and asked why she or her Cleveland counterpart were never notified of police contact with a registered sex offender accused of sexual violence. This is pitiful and unacceptable. Six dead PEOPLE so far. May they rest in peace and may their families receive justice. I just hope the Cleveland Police Department realizes that perhaps they could have saved them. It's shameful that these women are dead because of the police department's apathy and neglect. I can't imagine twice finding beaten women at my home or my neighbor's home and no one even comes to talk to me about it.

It's just shameful, isn't it? There obviously were opportunities to investigate this man and get him back in custody. This didn't need to happen. I feel so sorry for these poor women.

This is apathy all right -tragic apathy. How did we get to the place where instead of defending each other and taking responsibility each for their own neighborhoods, we just offshore and outsource security and well-being to some distant and uncaring government officials? This is what happens when government dominates our lives to the point where we are helpless, and of course no goverrnment employee will ever care about a woman the way her family or her neighbors in a healthy community would.

Next comes health care. Soon your doctor will be as apathetic and distant as these cops. We went from communities that did our own fire protection and defended our own, with guns, and retribution where needed, to a group of cowered government pap-suckers that cannot even help a woman being raped outside their house. Instead, we phone it in to the "big gummit" which is supposed to be like a God or some huge protection that does everything right, actually they are just apathetic underpaid government stooges.

Then we whine ate the government officials to protect us. It's not possible. They can never take your life as seriously as you will. A safe country is a well-armed country.

Sharn Cedar, What do you expect ordinary citizens to do? The citizens of Cleveland made efforts including contacting the police and the health department. Unfortunately, the investigation was either inadequate or not fruitful. What can citizens do? Search, seize, investigate, try, convict, all on their own? jWhile I agree with your idea that we need to take individual responsibility and more community efforts, the idea that the individual can investigate this type of crime is in my opinion, unrealistic.

I'm put in mind of the young woman who recently went into a police station and told them she had been kidnapped, what was it, 13 years ago? She had 2 children by her abductor during the time. I can't recall her name right now, but I do remember the police went to the home on at least 2 occasions because of calls from neighbors and didn't even look around. She was right there in the back of the place being held in a compound of some sort. Someone help me out with the name here.

What the hell is up with the police in this country? If they can't taser someone they're just not interested or what?!

Again more proof that law enforcement is not responsible for an individuals safety.

Now we know how much smarter our leaders were over 200 years ago when they wrote the Second Amendment. The cretins of today want to disarm the American citizen.

Over the weekend, the police set up a command post near Mr. Sowell’s house and urged people to come forward with information on missing relatives or friends. Only four people have provided information, the police said.

No kidding? Maybe if each incident had been investigated appropriately and the neighborhood canvassed after each incident they would have more information and more witnesses to interview. Um, duh.
